No matter where you go, it’s impossible to escape the holiday madness – even at work. The odds are high that you have at least one co-worker who is overly enthusiastic about their ugly Christmas sweater, a Secret Santa gift list that’s being passed around and an office party on your calendar.
Unfortunately, it’s not all twinkly lights and wrapping paper. Sexual harassment in the workplace can be a real issue at this time of the year.
Why might sexual harassment spike in December?
The holidays are supposed to be fun, and nobody should have to feel unsafe or uncomfortable at work – or any work event, but there are some definite reasons that sexual harassment incidents can occur around this time of the year:
- Office parties and alcohol: Let’s be real – office holiday parties are notorious. Throw in some free-flowing drinks, and suddenly people who are professional all year round might cross some boundaries. Alcohol lowers inhibitions, and what might feel like “fun” banter to one person can easily turn into inappropriate behavior for someone else.
- A looser, festive atmosphere: The holidays tend to blur the lines between personal and professional a little more than usual. There’s more socializing, more after-hours events and (often) a more relaxed dress code. While none of these things ever justify harassment, they can create situations where people feel inclined to act in ways they normally wouldn’t.
- Misinterpretations: Holiday cheer can sometimes be misread as encouragement or consent. A casual hug, a joke or even a compliment can get misinterpreted. This is especially true in environments where people aren’t clear on what’s appropriate.
Sexual harassment is never acceptable – holiday season or not. If you have fallen victim to abuse, it may be wisest to seek more legal guidance that’s specific to your situation.
